Norman Jackson Memorial Tournament
hdcl3In one of best come from behind victory, HDCL defeated Commonwealth Cricket League by one wicket in their opening game of Tournament in memory of late Mr. Norman Jackson. On a hot and humid day, CCCAT won the toss and elected to bat first but found them in trouble against the exceptional spell of fast bowling form HDCL's star bowler, Tawab Ikram. Tawab accounted for two of the first three batsmen while John Kirstein supported him from other end with fast and controlled spell and in the process removed the opening batsman of CCCAT. CCCAT never recovered from early jolts and were struggling at 110 for 9 but it was a partnership of 46 for the last wicket that took them to respectable total of 156 all out. F. Adams with 5 huge sixes made 68 runs for CCCAT and remained not out. For HDCL Khizar Bilal was the most successful bolwer with a figure of 8-1-34-3. Tawab Ikram 8-1-24-2, John Kirstein 6-0-21-1, Arbab Amjad 5-0-38-2 and Varinder Singh 3-0-22-1 were the wicket takers. The team was well supported in outfield with some outstanding catches, ground fielding and superb wicket keeping from debutant Sikander Gill. HDCL started their run chase and immediately found them in trouble loosing their opener in the 2nd over at the score of 8. John Kirstein and 19 year old debutant Jananzeb Niazi started the rebuilding process and took the score past 35 but soon after the dismissal of John, HDCL lost wickets at regular interval and we left at 80 for 8 and defeat for HDCL and victory for CCCAT were a matter of time. But the last three batsmen from HDCL had different ideas and slowly started their march towards a very difficult victory target with some controlled batting display that was studded with some lusty blows when presented with oportunities. A sense of recovery was evident when HDCL reached 126 for 8 and only 30 runs were required. The game of uncertainity took another turn when Raja Aqeel, who was batting on well made 33 runs was given run out. 30 runs were still required with the last pair at the crease and that brought Tawab Ikram to the middle who made his intentions clear by smashing the first ball he faced to mid wicket boundy. On the other end, Varinder was batting like a mature middle order rotating the strike while Tawab used his energy and style to smash the ball over the boundries when ever the opportunity was presented. Fittingly Tawab finished off the game with a towering six to hand HDCL victory in its first encounter. Congratulations to HDCL players for a fine victory and hope to see more of such games in coming weeks and months.
